Who is the best James Bond?

Daniel Craig. I love his hard craggy edge. I grew up loving Roger Moore, but think that was familiarity rather than real admiration.

10:41 am: Writer's Block: Bless you!
What are you allergic to?

Work! Just kidding.

I'm allergic to pine needles, certain surfactants in shampoos & conditioners, and rabbit fur.

Figured out the rabbit fur one when I kept tearing up when wearing a pink angora sweater.

And codeine. And penicillin.

Oddly enough, outgrew many of my other environmental allergies.

09:33 am: well, that could have been exciting in a bad way
Wow, apparently I'm really in the forgetful, futzing forties. I apparently dropped part of my keys near my car this a.m. Luckily for me, one of my faculty members saw them and remembered that I drive a Honda (the only one in the lot, btw). So, whew. That could have been ugly though, since it had a housekey on the ring too!

I really need to pay more attention, but I know exactly how it happened. I have a carbiner clip that I use to clip my keys to my purse, etc. The car keys & one house key were on a separate ring and that dropped off as I was trying to clip the damned things to my purse so I could find them again!

*sighs*

10:13 am: Just not feelin' Halloweenie this year
I don't know why, but I'm just not into Halloween this year. It feels like it just snuck up on me. Hubby's going to decorate the yard today, but we're getting a BIG Nor'easter tomorrow, so whatever he puts up will have to withstand Tropical Storm force winds and rain.

That's it from my driver's seat.

05:33 pm: EARTHQUAKE? WTF?
Ok, wow, so. We had an earthquake today. My first. We're fine.

I've been battling a sinus infection and finally threw in the towel and stayed home from work today.  I was taking a nap and Hubby was at work. I thought it was a truck rolling by by house. Nope. At least I didn't sleep through my first earthquake! And apparently we're getting a hurricane this weekend. Yesh.

I went next door to make sure our nice neighbors were ok. Mrs. Nice was home and sent me back to my house with a bowl of Jell-O. awww.

Tried to call Hubby, but all the lines were tied up. We were able to IM though, and eventually he got through to me on the landline. He said the 3rd floor of his work building was shaking like crazy and they evacuated the building! o.O

Just wow.

What is the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten? Was it any good?

What counts as weird these days? I'm not Zimmern eating duck balls around the world, but I have eaten (and liked) smoked eel, ostrich, and beef tongue.

09:23 pm: NYC 2011-June visit

NYC 2011-June visit, originally uploaded by lilfish1.

We zipped up to New York City last weekend for a quick visit and to see the Alexander McQueen "Savage Beauty" exhibit (see info here) at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (it was amazing, but no photos were allowed). We kept it very cheap by staying in New Jersey. It's amazing how that shaved $$$ off the hotel room (La Quinta in Secaucus, NJ, $133/night total w/ taxes) even though we were literally across the river and only minutes from the heart of the city. More photos on my Flickr account (here). Enjoy, because I sure did.

If you had to relocate to another city, what would you miss most about the place you're leaving behind.

I would miss the spring bulb plants, my garden, good crab cakes, and of course, the friends I've made up here.

11:01 am: It's a Hobbit Life
Well, I see I've neglected my LJ a whole bunch. Sorry LJ people. Sorry LJ. Life just keeps moving along though.

Let's see:
* gardening continues apace. We now have the following raised-bed gardens, one 8' x 4', one 4' x 4', and one 1' x 16' (that last one is all tomatoes and some tomatillos)
* home projects have continued as well. Hubby and I hired someone to rehang our front door and then install deadbolts in the backdoor and shed. Well worth the $ because it's done right the first time and we didn't have to buy a raft of unnecessary tools.
* Hubby installed a shelf over the fridge that looks fabulous and helps to alleviate the missing cupboard that was ripped out when we got our too-big fridge last year.
* I've been reading books. Nothing to write home about, but I am trying to read things on my ipod touch, using it as an e-reader.
* It's summertime and the pace at work is now slow enough to make me forget why I hate my job during semester.
* Our adoption is just where we left it last time: still waiting. By the way, waiting sucks.
* I'm still quilting. I joined a guild to have other folks to sew with/learn from and it's been a blast. I'm challenging myself with a Block of the Month. So far so good.

I find that I enjoy being at home, gardening and quilting the older I get. I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing. :D

07:31 am: 2 minute post
Better than a 2 minute egg?

* hurt back is getting better, slowly. I have PT 2x a week and I resent having to give up my lunch break to exercise!
* work is finally slowing to a dull roar. The 2 weeks leading up to semester and then the first two are usually hell, with too much required of one person.
* my beloved boss is leaving. I have a new chair, two new directors, and a new grad assistant to train. Eep.
* my sewing machine is in the shop and I'm obsessing about buying my *next* machine. I need to price used models and start saving I think...

09:07 am: update on the medical experiement that is Lilfish
I reinjured my back a week or more ago. Thanks to Rx, PT and rest from my sitting job, I am on the mend. It's still hard to be back at work and I could not have been away for a week at a WORSE time of year. *sighs* and sobs a bit.

On other notes, I've joined a quilt guild. I'm now (probably) the youngest member. It's good though, means I can learn from my elders. They're a fun group too. Don't discount the +60 crowd as being fuddy-duddies, not all are.

Hubby and I have a special date night planned. We're going to turn off the phones, computer, etc., and eat pizza and watch "Iron Man2". ahhhh... I love low key at home date nights.

Tomorrow, I'm puppy sitting my girlfriend CBS's adorable poodle. Makes me really want to get a pet, but I'm glad not to be tied down or have vet bills right now. I feel like we're just squeaking by and to have vet bills would mean to incur debt.

How are you?

And I have to go buy a dress to wear to a wedding. Ugh.

11:18 am: Writer's Block: Snack attack
What food would you never put in your mouth for any reason, and why?

muskrat. It's a delicacy up here on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Hubby tried it and said it was the nastiest thing. I'll pass.

08:13 am: Happy Almost 2011
Really not feeling the wheeeee of New Year's Eve. We have a split of champagne to share and that will be the extent of it.

Otherwise, we're fine. Today I am going to get the waffles I have been dreaming about since I took hubby to the hospital. He said it's too bad that the restaurant doesn't do their fried chicken at the same time since that's his favorite thing in the world: fried chicken, not waffles.

There's snow still on the ground. I hope it melts soon. It's mangy and the side streets are still a disaster to travel upon.

I've been working on my blue & white quilt, which is from, um 3 years ago. Eep. I want to finish it before the end of January.

That's it from here. Happy New Year's Eve to you and yours. :)

09:36 am: Merry Christmas, y'all
I'm still alive and sorta well. Last week, I had a sinus infection and then on Sunday, Hubby got really sick. So sick that I took his sorry ass to the hospital, where they diagnosed him with an intestinal obstruction. Poor guy. They admitted him, he spent 2 nights there and then released after the obstruction passed on its own. Whew.

So, this Christmas we're moving kinda slowly and not really feeling it. It's OK. I'm one of those who refuses to force the happy because that's the crap that haunted my childhood. You feel what you feel.

We did some of our usual things and that helped a bit. We went to Wal-Mart to watch the Last Minute Desperation Shopping. Then last night we drove around looking at Christmas lights... still can't figure out what neighborhood has lots of good lights... maybe there isn't one.

We watched Midnight Mass from St. Peter's Basilica, even though neither of us is Catholic, it's just one of those traditions. Hubby likes to see the inside of St. Peter's. I usually fall asleep to the Latin mass.

So, there's us in a nutshell. Merry Christmas, y'all.

What do you think is the coolest feature of handheld tablets?

Their huge price tag, the fact that you need to charge them, and the fact that they'll be obsolete before I can afford one. Or am I just bitter?

11:50 am: Finished Objects of 2010

Finished Objects of 2010, originally uploaded by lilfish1.

I know I've been a bit MiA lately, but wanted to let you know I'm still alive and kicking.
Here's a mosaic of all the stuff I made in 2010. I think there are a few things missing, but you get the idea. I am stunned that my crochet projects outnumber my knitting! Wow. I had no idea that I switched teams.

We have decorated a bit for Christmas, but since we'd have to completely disassemble our livingroom or dining room in order to fit the full-size tree in there, we're going with Kitch-mas. That means a pink tinsel tree with minimal decorations. Lights are up around the house and inside too. That's enough for us both.

I still need to label and send the batik quilt to my inlaws. I surely hope they like it. It's a hard one for me to part with.

How the heck have you all been?

11:04 am: words of wisdom
I don't want to forget these words of wisdom from my (awesome) boss.

"Apartheid taught me that i have resiliency that i would never have known about. I do not wait to ask for what I want. I go and get it. Face what you fear and do it anyway."

This woman grew up in some of the most deadly and scary times in South Africa as a black woman. She truly is amazing. Calm, nice, firm, and direct. I'm lucky to work for her.

She is NOT an entitlement case like so many others.

Today, I'm grateful for a brave and supportive mentor. I am right where I need to be.
